Buying wheels or tires for a Nissan Frontier without the fitment numbers in front of you is how you end up with a $1,200 set that rubs, won’t torque flat, or — worse — doesn’t bolt on at all. The good news: the modern Frontier’s specs are refreshingly simple and shared across a whole family of Nissans, so once you know the pattern the aftermarket and the used-takeoff market open right up. The catch is the first-gen truck, which plays by different rules. This is the reference: the exact numbers, what they mean, and how big you can actually go.

The numbers, by generation
Here’s the whole picture in one place. These are the well-established factory specs; always confirm against your own truck (the sticker in the door jamb lists the factory wheel and tire sizes for your exact trim).

The two things that decide whether a wheel will physically bolt on are the bolt pattern and the center bore. Everything else — offset, width, tire size — decides whether it fits well.
D40 and D41: the easy ones (6x114.3)
Both the second-gen D40 and the current D41 use a 6x114.3mm bolt pattern, 66.1mm center bore, and M12x1.25 studs. That’s the same pattern Nissan used on the Xterra and shares with a long list of other vehicles, which is why used PRO-4X and SV takeoff wheels are cheap and everywhere. A D40 wheel bolts onto a D41 and vice versa. When you shop aftermarket, you want a wheel listed as 6x114.3 with a center bore of 66.1mm (or larger, run with hub-centric rings) and an offset that keeps the tire from rubbing — more on that below.
D22: measure before you buy (6x139.7, usually)
The first-gen D22 is the odd one out. Most 4WD and V6 D22 trucks use a 6x139.7mm (6x5.5”) six-lug pattern with a larger hub bore, while some two-wheel-drive four-cylinders came with a five-lug pattern. Because it varies, do not assume — measure your existing wheel’s bolt circle or check the truck before ordering. A 6x114.3 wheel from a newer Frontier will not fit a 6x139.7 D22, and vice versa. When you do find the right pattern, D22 factory steel and alloy wheels turn up used on eBay Motors for a fraction of new.
Offset and backspacing, in plain English
These two numbers are where most fitment mistakes happen, so it’s worth thirty seconds.
- Offset is how far the wheel’s mounting face is from its centerline, measured in millimeters. Positive offset (like the Frontier’s factory ~+30mm) moves the mounting face toward the street side, tucking the tire under the fender. Lower or negative offset moves the tire outboard, for a wider stance.
- Backspacing measures the same thing from the other direction — the distance from the mounting face to the back lip of the rim, in inches. Lower backspacing = wheel sits farther out.
Why you care: a lower-offset (or wider) wheel pushes the tire out, which can clear a bigger tire inside the wheel well and looks more aggressive — but it also increases scrub radius and bearing load, and it’s the fast way to make a tire rub the fender or flare. Go too far outboard and you’re chewing wheel bearings and fender liners. The factory offset is a sane baseline; step away from it deliberately, not by accident. If you run a spacer to fake a lower offset, use a hub-centric spacer matched to the 66.1mm bore (D40/D41) and re-torque after the first drive.
One more term: hub-centric vs. lug-centric. The factory 66.1mm center bore carries the weight of the truck on the hub, not the lugs. Many aftermarket wheels have a larger bore (often 106.1mm) to fit multiple vehicles — pair those with hub-centric rings so the wheel centers on the hub, or you’ll fight vibration.
How big a tire can you actually run?
Tire fitment on a Frontier is a function of three things at once — lift height, wheel offset, and how much trimming you’ll tolerate — so treat this as a starting map, not a guarantee. Diameters below are approximate.

A leveling kit is the single best bang-for-buck first move — it lifts only the front to match the rear, opens up room for a 32-ish tire, and keeps the ride factory-smooth. Going bigger also changes your effective gearing and your speedometer: a taller tire makes the truck feel lazier off the line and reads slow on the dash. It’s livable on a mild bump; on a big jump you may want a speedometer recalibrator or a re-gear.
Don’t forget the small parts
New wheels often need parts nobody mentions until install day:
- Lug nuts — aftermarket wheels frequently need a different seat (conical vs. the factory style) or length. Confirm the seat type and buy the matching M12x1.25 lugs.
- Hub-centric rings — if your wheel bore is larger than 66.1mm (D40/D41).
- TPMS sensors — 2008-and-later trucks have tire-pressure sensors; a fresh set of wheels needs sensors transferred or new ones programmed.
- A proper torque wrench — torque the lugs in a star pattern to your manual’s spec (roughly 98 lb-ft on the modern truck) and re-check after 25–50 miles. Air-gunning them warps rotors.

For the D40 and D41, the used market is your friend. Owners upgrade to aftermarket wheels constantly and sell their factory sets — PRO-4X 17-inch takeoffs and SV alloys turn up on eBay Motors in sets of four or five for a fraction of new, already the correct 6x114.3 pattern and 66.1mm bore. If you want an OEM look, a factory setup, or a cheap spare-friendly matched set, that’s the value play. New aftermarket makes sense when you specifically want a different offset, width, or finish for a lift. Either way, match the bolt pattern and bore first, dial the offset second, and size the tire to your suspension — in that order.
