Nissan Frontier Maintenance Schedule & Parts Checklist (D22, D40, D41)
The service intervals and the exact consumables to buy for a Nissan Frontier — engine oil grade and capacity, oil and air filter part-number families, the factory cabin-filter quirk, spark plug interval, coolant, brake fluid, and battery group — by generation, with normal vs. severe-service timing and where genuine OEM parts off eBay Motors beat the parts-store shelf.
Nothing keeps a Frontier on the road longer or cheaper than staying ahead of the maintenance schedule with the right consumables. These trucks — the long-lived D40 in particular — will run past 250,000 miles on clean oil, fresh filters, and the correct fluids. The catch is that “the right part” changes by generation and engine, and a couple of Frontier-specific quirks (looking at you, missing cabin filter) trip up owners who assume it works like every other truck. This is the reference: what to do, when to do it, and exactly what to buy.
Before anything else, know which truck you have — the engine decides the oil, the filter, and the plug. If you’re unsure, start with our Frontier generations & fitment reference and decode the 10th character of your VIN for the model year.
The Frontier service schedule at a glance
Nissan publishes two schedules: normal and severe. Read the severe column, because that’s how most Frontiers actually live — towing, dusty or unpaved roads, short cold-start trips, extended idling, or heat. When in doubt, run the shorter interval. Always confirm the exact figures in your year’s owner’s manual; this is the well-established shape of the schedule, not a substitute for your book.
| Service | Severe-service interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | ~3,750–5,000 mi | 5,000 mi is the sane real-world number for a work truck |
| Tire rotation | Every oil change (~5,000 mi) | Cross-rotate; check pressures and tread |
| Engine air filter | Inspect ~15,000 mi, replace ~30,000 mi | Sooner in dust or off-road use |
| Cabin air filter | ~15,000–20,000 mi | D40 owners: see the retrofit note below |
| Brake fluid | ~Every 2 years / 30,000 mi | DOT 3; a spongy pedal means do it now |
| Engine coolant | Long first interval (~105,000 mi), then per manual | Nissan blue long-life coolant only |
| Spark plugs | ~105,000 mi | Platinum/iridium; see the plug note |
| Automatic trans fluid | ~30,000–60,000 mi if you tow, else per manual | Nissan-spec ATF only — the wrong fluid ruins these |
| Serpentine/accessory belt | Inspect every oil change, replace when cracked/glazed | A squeal on cold start is your warning |
| Diff / transfer case (4WD) | Per manual, sooner if you tow, off-road, or ford water | Water crossings contaminate gear oil fast |
Tire rotation lives on this list for a reason: it’s free at every oil change and it doubles the life of a set of tires. If you’re running a lift or oversized tires, our lift kit buyer’s guide covers the alignment and wear angles that come with it.
The parts checklist by generation
Buy the consumables to the engine, not just the model. Here’s what fits what.
Engine oil
- D22 (1998–2004) — 2.4L KA24DE four-cylinder and 3.3L VG33E V6 (including the supercharged VG33ER): 5W-30 conventional or synthetic, 10W-30 acceptable in sustained heat.
- D40 (2005–2021) — 2.5L QR25DE four (early) and the mainstay 4.0L VQ40DE V6: 5W-30. The VQ40 holds roughly 5.4 US quarts (5.1 L) with a new filter — confirm by manual.
- 2020–2021 D40 and all D41 (2022+) — 3.8L VQ38DD V6: 0W-20. This is the big one owners get wrong — the newer engine wants the thinner oil, so don’t carry a 5W-30 habit over from an older Frontier.
Oil filter
The Nissan V6 filter family — 15208-65F0C (which supersedes the older 15208-65F0A / -9E01A) — covers the VQ40DE and most Nissan V6s of the era, so it’s the one D40 4.0L owners buy by the case. Quality aftermarket crosses exist (Fram PH6607, Wix 51356, Purolator L14612), but for a filter this cheap, a genuine Nissan or premium unit is money well spent. Genuine filters by the multipack are one of the best deals on eBay Motors — see the OEM oil filter button above.
Engine air filter
The D40 4.0L uses Nissan 16546-EA000 (aftermarket cross Fram CA10261). Inspect it at every other oil change and replace it sooner than the schedule if you spend time on dirt — a clogged air filter quietly costs you fuel economy and throttle response. Chasing more airflow rather than just clean airflow? That’s a different project — see engine & performance.
Cabin air filter — the Frontier quirk
Here’s the one that surprises people: the second-gen D40 (2005–2021) Frontier shipped with no cabin air filter installed from the factory in many years, even though the housing is there behind the glovebox. If your vents smell musty or your A/C airflow is weak, that empty slot is why. A retrofit kit is inexpensive, installs in about 15 minutes with the glovebox dropped, and is one of the highest-payoff small jobs on the truck. The 2022+ D41 has a proper factory cabin filter — change it every 15,000–20,000 miles, more often if you drive dusty roads. Grab the retrofit kit or a genuine filter from the cabin-filter button above.
Spark plugs
The 4.0L VQ40DE runs long-life platinum plugs (the PLFR5A-11 family) on a ~105,000-mile interval — a job you’ll do once or twice in the life of the truck. Use the correct platinum or iridium plug, never re-gap a pre-gapped iridium plug, and go easy torquing them into the aluminum heads. A misfire or rough idle well before 105k is almost always a failing coil pack, not the plugs — a common enough Frontier gripe that it’s on our common Frontier problems list.
Fluids & the rest
- Coolant — Nissan blue long-life coolant only; mixing in the wrong chemistry is how water pumps and heater cores die early. Long first interval, then per your manual.
- Brake fluid — DOT 3, flushed about every two years. A soft pedal is your cue to do it now. If you’re refreshing the brakes anyway, our brake upgrade guide and the brakes category cover pads, rotors, and hardware.
- Automatic transmission fluid — use only the Nissan-spec ATF for your transmission; the wrong fluid is a known killer of these gearboxes. If you tow, shorten the interval hard (30,000–60,000 miles).
- Battery — group size 24F, top-post. Match the group and meet or beat the factory cold-cranking amps.
Shopping used or OEM
For consumables, genuine Nissan filters and plugs off eBay Motors — often sold in multipacks at a real discount over the parts-store shelf — are the smart buy, and the listings show live seller pricing so you can compare before you commit. Match the part number to your engine using the checklist above, then use the buttons below.
Keep the schedule, keep the receipts, and a Frontier will outlast almost anything on the lot.
