The four brake pad compounds
Every brake pad you can buy for a Frontier falls into one of four friction-material families. The friction material is the block bonded to the backing plate; what it’s made of decides everything about how the pad behaves.

NAO — non-asbestos organic
The soft, quiet baseline. NAO pads are made from fibers, fillers and resins with little or no metal. They’re gentle on rotors and nearly silent, but they wear fast and fade early under heat — fine for a light-duty commuter, underspec’d for a Frontier that works. Many “low-metallic NAO” pads add 10–30% steel to claw back some heat capacity at the cost of more noise and dust.
Ceramic
The modern daily-driver default, and what most late-model Frontiers wear from the factory. Ceramic pads use dense ceramic fibers with a little copper. They run quiet, produce a light-colored dust that doesn’t cake your wheels, and are easy on rotors. The catch: a budget ceramic can lose bite once it’s genuinely hot, so they reward daily driving over heavy, sustained towing.
Semi-metallic
The truck-work compound. Semi-metallics are 30–65% metal (steel wool, copper, iron), which is why they dump heat so well and resist fade under repeated hard stops. The trade-offs are real — more noise, more dark dust, weaker bite until they warm slightly, and faster rotor wear. If you tow, this is where you start.
Severe-duty / carbon-metallic
Purpose-built for trucks that live under load — heavy towing, big-tire builds, or anyone who’s faded a lesser pad. These carry the highest heat capacity of the four and the most aggressive bite, at the cost of the most noise, the most dust, and the hardest rotor wear. This is the literal answer to a “frontier heavy duty brake” search.
How to read a brake pad’s specs
Two numbers on the box (and stamped on the pad) tell you almost everything you need.
The FMSI number is the pad’s standardized shape-and-application code. It guarantees the pad physically fits a specific caliper and axle. This is the number that must match your Frontier’s generation, cab, and axle — front and rear pads are different shapes, and a D40 front pad is not a D41 front pad. The SAE J866 friction edge code is a two-letter stamp — like FF, FG, or GG — on the edge of the pad or its backing plate:
- The first letter is the friction coefficient cold/at normal temperature.
- The second letter is the coefficient hot.
- The scale runs roughly: E ≈ 0.25–0.35, F ≈ 0.35–0.45, G ≈ 0.45–0.55, H ≈ 0.55+.
So an FF pad has steady, moderate bite hot and cold; a GF pad bites hard cold then softens with heat; a GG pad stays aggressive throughout. The edge code describes consistency and bite — not lifespan or quality. Read it alongside the compound: a semi-metallic GG is a serious towing pad, while a GF may not be the friend you want at the bottom of a long grade with a trailer pushing you.
Match the compound to how you drive
The single most useful thing you can do is be honest about your Frontier’s heaviest regular duty cycle — not its lightest — and buy for that.
- Mostly commuting, unloaded: a quality ceramic pad. Quiet, clean wheels, gentle on rotors, plenty of bite for daily stops.
- Occasional light towing / bed loads: a low-metallic or a heavier-duty ceramic. A little more heat headroom without going full semi-met.
- Regular towing near capacity, or mountain grades: semi-metallic, and check the edge code for strong hot performance (an FF or GG).
- Heavy towing, work truck, big tires, or you’ve faded a pad before: severe-duty / carbon-metallic. Accept the noise and dust as the price of heat capacity.

Rear brakes: disc or drum?
Frontier rear brakes changed over the life of the model, and the configuration decides what part you’re even shopping for — drum brakes use shoes, not pads. The first-gen D22 (1998–2004) generally paired front discs with rear drums. Later trucks moved toward four-wheel discs on many configurations, but rear-drum setups persisted on some years and trims — which is exactly why “frontier brake conversion” (rear drum-to-disc swaps) is a recurring project.
Don’t guess: look through the rear wheel. A shiny rotor with a caliper is a disc; a solid metal drum is a drum. Confirm against your VIN and generation (D22 / D40 / D41 reference) before ordering, because ordering pads for a truck that runs shoes is the most common brake-parts mistake.
Wear indicators and when to replace
Go by wear, not by a mileage rule of thumb — pad life swings from roughly 25,000 to 60,000-plus miles depending on compound, load, and driving style.
- Listen for the squealer. Most pads have a metal wear-indicator tab that chirps when about 2–3mm of material remains. That squeal means inspect now.
- Look before it’s metal-on-metal. A pad worn to its backing plate scores the rotor — a cheap pad job becomes a pad-and-rotor job.
- Replace per axle, in sets, with new hardware, and bed the new pads in properly. Even the best compound underperforms if it isn’t seated.
